Guide

How do you stop gambling?

Seven concrete steps that make it easier to stop – and to stay with the decision when the craving comes.

1. Pick a date

Choose a day and write it down. A clear start date turns the decision into something concrete instead of a vague 'soon'.

2. Self-exclude

Use the national self-exclusion scheme where you live – GAMSTOP in the UK, or the state programme where you are. It blocks licensed operators and usually their marketing too. It takes a few minutes.

3. Block payments

Most banks can block gambling transactions on your card. Remove saved cards and delete gambling apps the same day.

4. Tell someone

One person who knows makes a relapse far less likely. It doesn't need to be a long conversation – a message is enough.

5. Get to know your cravings

Cravings come in waves and usually pass within 20 minutes. Note when they arrive: time, feeling, place. The pattern becomes clear fast.

6. Replace the habit, don't just remove it

Gambling served a purpose. Plan what you'll do instead during the hours you used to gamble – a walk, a shower, calling someone, ten minutes of tidying.

7. Count days, not perfection

A slip doesn't erase what you've done. Continue from the next day instead of starting over from zero in your head.

How long does it take?

The first two weeks are usually the hardest. Around day 20–30 the cravings tend to come less often and feel weaker. That's why 30 days is a good first goal – long enough for your brain to notice the change, short enough to feel doable.
